George Bernard Shaw said, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” In this grand thought, we might take today, New Years Day, to consider our character strengths and virtues.
Shaw won both an Academy Award and a Nobel Prize through his work as a playwright.  It’s important to consider the times that he lived which were from July 26, 1856 to November 2, 1950.  What he found in his time he worked with and created with what he could.
Character strengths contribute to fulfillment in life.  Such strengths are positive characteristics that bring satisfaction. According to “Character Strengths and Virtues,” a book by Christopher Peterson and Martin E.P. Seligman, the first criterion of a character strength is:
“A strength contributes to various fulfillments that constitute the good life, for oneself and for others. Although strengths and virtues determine how an individual copes with adversity, our focus is on how they fulfill an individual.”

Creating Yourself

Okay. You still have time. You have now, so begin by choosing how you will be creating yourself.
On this special New Years day, consider how you will focus on fulfilling your own being. Pretend that you are on your deathbed. In these last moments, imagine that you are contemplating the life you just finished and finish these thoughts:
“I wish I had spent more time ________________.”
“I wish I had spent more time making a mark on the world doing   _____________.”
“I wish I had spent more time with my children being __________________.”
“If I could do it all over, I wish I could ______________.”
It’s up to you. Start creating yourself in the highest and best possible way.  Reach High! Happy New Years!
Best wishes,
